Leadership Lesson 20: Happiness Is a Choice

How often do you say, "I’ll be happy when..." - pinning your happiness on some future milestone? The truth is, happiness isn’t something that happens to you - it’s something you choose. Every day, you decide whether to dwell on what’s missing or embrace gratitude for what you have. Stop waiting for happiness to arrive. Choose it. Create it. Live it - right now!

A person standing at a crossroads with two paths - one labeled "Choose Happiness" and the other "Stay Unhappy."

“I will be happy when…” How many times have you caught yourself uttering those words, pinning your hopes for happiness on some future event or achievement? “I will be happy when I find love. I will be happy when I get a promotion. I will be happy when I can buy a house.” And so the list goes on, an endless litany of conditions that you impose upon yourself, tying your happiness to the whims of fate.

But here’s the truth: happiness is not something that happens to you; it’s something that you choose. It’s a conscious decision that you make every single day, regardless of your circumstances. It’s the choice to find joy in the small moments, to appreciate the beauty that surrounds you, and to cultivate a spirit of gratitude for all that you have.

You cannot control the events that unfold in your life or the challenges that you face, but you can control how you respond to them. You can choose to dwell on the negatives, to fixate on what you lack, and to wallow in self-pity. Or you can choose to focus on the positives, to find meaning in adversity, and to embrace life with open arms.

The key to unlocking happiness lies not in the pursuit of external validation or material success; it lies in the realization that true happiness comes from within – from the choices that you make, the attitudes that you adopt, and the perspectives that you embrace.

So remember that happiness is not a destination; it’s a journey. It’s not a prize to be won or a goal to be achieved; it’s something that you create, each and every day, with every choice that you make.
