Leadership Lesson 4: Rule Your Mind Or It Will Rule You

Your mind is constantly talking to you -shaping your thoughts, perceptions, and actions. But left unchecked, it defaults to fear, doubt, and worst-case scenarios. It whispers, “What if I fail?” instead of “What if I succeed?” The truth is, your thoughts shape your reality. If you don’t take control of your inner dialogue, it will control you. Ruling your mind takes discipline, but the reward is freedom - freedom from fear, anxiety, and self-doubt. So take charge of your thoughts, rewrite the narrative, and start shaping your life with intent.

A thought bubble divided into two sections: one filled with positive affirmations, goals, and aspirations, and the other filled with negative self-talk and doubts.

Do you know that little voice inside your mind that constantly whispers to you? The voice that narrates your thoughts, comments on everything you do, and influences your perceptions of the world around you? I bet it talks to you right now!

Our brains are hardwired to keep us safe, and this means erring on the side of caution, magnifying potential pitfalls, and projecting the worst possible outcome. These scenarios often suggest that we’re not good enough, that we can’t succeed, and that failure is inevitable. They fuel fear and anxiety and paralyze us if left unchecked. But here’s the thing: these scenarios are just that – scenarios: they haven’t happened yet, and most of them likely never will.

Imagine you have been given a new big account and are about to meet for the first time with their senior management who are known to be unpleasant to deal with: as you prepare, your mind begins to generate worst-case scenarios: “What if they reject my proposal? What if they prefer one of my competitors? What if they don’t like me?” These thoughts are not only unhelpful and irrational; they hold the power to completely demolish you unless you replace them with more constructive ones: “What if they like my proposal? What if they prefer me over my competitors? What if they love me?” Still “What If’s”, but that’s all your thoughts about future outcomes are anyhow, so why not have them paint the best possible outcome!

Ruling your mind requires discipline and practice: it’s about taking control of your inner dialogue and consciously shaping it to align with your aspirations and values. So the next time that little voice in your head starts talking you down, remember: you have the power to rule your mind or let it rule you. Choose wisely, for your thoughts have the power to shape your reality!
